Okay, so last Saturday I had the best pancakes I have ever eaten IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.  They were had at The Red Rooster Cafe in Cottonwood.  They were pumpkin pancakes, and full of delicious spices, and soft and moist without being too poofy, and slathered in real freshly-whipped cream.  Oh, and they came with cinnamony homemade peach compote, not that it even needed it.  Oh and a side-cup of yogurt with fresh berries. Gilding the lily.

Squashycrumble is to the $2.99 supermarket pumpkin pie as these pancakes are to normal pancakes.

OMG. O.M.G.

Then we went hiking in Sycamore Canyon for a ways (not the whole way, we went about 1.5 miles in & then back out.).  It was totally beautiful. We'll have to go back & hike the entire route.  Maybe when the water level is lower.  Because sometimes crossing the creeks can be nerve-wracking. That's where we stopped, at the second crossing, near a big swoop in the creek.  My boots are waterproof, but they're only as high as mid-calf, and the idea of walking back several miles in wet boots/socks is not a happy one.  So, more adventures for the future!

AND we found FOSSILS!!! Which is totally exciting, because there's limestone & such all over the freaking place, and I had yet to see a single fossil. So I am VERY excited to have seen all these fossilized shells, coral, and other oceany stuff.

We found a great rock where we could sit & look out along the swoop in the creek, as it swooshes through the canyon.

And back up at the trailhead, we walked along the cliff-edge to see where this creek met the Verde River, and we kept an eye out for the tracks from the Verde canyon railroad, AND WE HAPPENED TO BE THERE AT EXACTLY THE RIGHT TIME TO SEE THE TRAIN GO BY.

Seriously. I could not have planned a better day. I mean, unexpected pancakes AND unexpected train sightings. Wacky.

(Yes, we waved to the train-passengers.)

PS - We are eagerly awaiting the full opening of Schnebly Hill Road. On Sunday, we went up to the "carousel" formation, which is as far as you can get in the current season.  We encountered every Pink Jeep Tour vehicle known to man, so we felt that we were definitely in the right place. And we giggled at the commentary of one tour guide: "You'd think that  someone had come up here and carved all this. But no! Mother Nature did all this!"  (This was the guy whose jeep said "Sedona's only green tours", and who had left the engine running while he and his retired-couple guidees scrambled around the red rocks.)
