Bell Trail
Dec. 5th, 2010 08:58 amWe went on the Bell Trail yesterday, and it was a ton of fun! The trail to the creek crossing makes a 7 mile roundtrip. We tried the trail in the summer and only got as far as 2 miles. We had thought that the trail followed the creek more closely and was therefore shaded - Alas, no. But the beauty of Sedona is any trail (there are many) that is too hot in the summer will be glorious in the winter. So off we went, and yes - after the full 7 miles, I was about as tired & weary as I had been after just 2 miles in 90 degrees.
It's a really beautiful trail - goes between some hills, following the creek, until it gets to a shaded area, with big flat red rocks to sit on. And since the sun is so far to the south in this season, the rocks were VERY cold to sit on - we reached that point at noon, and the sun was not quite peaking over the ridge. The trail continues on for an additional mile and a half, ascending one of the cliffs for views of the Sedona area & the San Francisco Peaks - that'll be a project for when we're better in shape.
Also, I ran into a cactus when decided to turn and take a photo. I had to pick the points out. It was not fun. I figure I had to do it once, right? So now that's over.
Next time: Try the off-shoot Weir trail; Go to the summit sometime. Also in that area: V-V petroglyph site, Montezuma's castle, Montezuma's well, Sacred Mountain.
