Back in Arizona
Dec. 1st, 2010 08:03 amWe got back last night from our trip to Michigan. It was definitely wonderful to be able to see some of my friends.
Thanksgiving was great. We drove to North Carolina from Michigan with friends to where K & A live in Winston-Salem. I have never been to that part of the world before. It's so beautiful - so many rolling hills and big trees.
I got to meet K&A's lovely daughter Esther, who is absolutely a sweetie. She seems happy and untroubled most of the time. And hopefully she'll start sleeping more of K&A's schedule soon, so they can get more rest!
B & I entertained their cat, Minya, a teeny-tiny poofball the color of dusky cobwebs and milkweed fluff. In the meantime, our cats Puck & Fiona were being cared for by Bob's mom, who all in all went way above & beyond the call of duty to help us this trip, for which we are super thankful.
The Thanksgiving dinner was full of more delicious food than any group of 8 people could hope to eat. Otterkin's oh-my-gods rosemary-dressed turkey, with gravy from the drippings. Homemade cranberry sauce. Fresh stuffing. A truly gigantic crock of garlic mashed potatoes. All-the-vegetables soup. Molasses rolls. 4 kinds of wine. Purple sweet potatoes in a color that does not seem possible for food. And desserts? Squashy-crumble (YUM!). Pecan pies. Gourmet ice creams and sorbet. Apple-cherry tart. Pear tart. I'm sure I'm forgetting things.
We packed turkey sandwiches - each according to our own individual preferences (mine is soft bread with mayo, salt, and pepper) - for the big 12-hour roadtrip back north. The trip went very smoothly. There may have been Muppet sing-a-longs involved.
Sunday we wandered Greenfield Village with Bob's brother & his wife. It's always great to see them, and this year, we'll be missing out on the around-Christmas movie-palooza. This year they're doing Harry Potter. I think that's a longer trek than the director's-cut Lord of the Rings we did a few years ago. Sounds like fun, though - maybe we'll do a tandem movie-watching, and be "together" in spirit. I'm sure Sheri will have better snacks, though. :)
One thing that was weird was being a visitor to a place I used to live. It makes any "downtime" portion of the trip sort of odd. And since my parents weren't in town (long story), there was a decent amount of downtime, or maybe limbo-time is a better word. I think next year we'll try to do the same amount of stuff in a shorter amount of time. Though an extra day with the Thanksgiving crowd would be super-great, I think - I'd be up to driving down on Tuesday to be there Wed-Th-Fri. Well, there's 12 months to figure it out for next year.
In summary: If I got to see you, yay! If I didn't, amidst all the running around, I apologize. And I'm glad to sleep in my own bed & snuggle with my cats. And now - back to work!
