Yes, all the storylines with his dad are fantastic. And as far as realistic, yes - and more than that, he's one of the few sympathetic characters. I mean, it's one thing for Quinn, a highschooler, to deceive people around her - Will's wife, though, ugh, what a horrible character. If you're looking for role models on the show, well... pretty much Kurt.
I do think Sue Sylvester is written well as a comedic character.
