Ängeln i rummet - Eva Dahlgren, tr. by a friend of mine.

The Angel In the Room

There’s an angel in my room
Her nest is right above my head
She makes me calm
And she whispers to me
All that I say to you

There’s an other in my body
Her soul is the most beautiful of souls
She is love and hope
And she tells you
How much I love you

There’s a spirit by my foot
Who blows warmth over my skin
It tingles and you saw how I smiled
And when she breathes over me
It’s so that you will get closer to the warmth

And here I am with all the rest
Of what makes a human whole
And I hope… I hope that you’ll cope with me
And that the angel in the room… that it’s her you’ll see
===
That last verse is gutting me.

Rootless
- Listen, read lyrics, download here

We are here so the stories get told.
Don’t give up, ride out, be bold,
Build the fire bright and strong,
Speak your truth and sing your song.

 We'll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

In college, I spent many many hours in the used cd store, sitting on a stool in front of the disc-player, a stack of random cds at my side. Sometimes Adam & I were there together, sometimes I was alone with the music.  In fact, if I'm honest, that may just be my faulty memory - Adam, or other friends, may have been there every time, and I'd still have been alone with the music once the headset was on.

Every spare dollar I had went to buying music, $7 apiece used.  If I could get 10 seconds into most songs on an album and like them, then I was in.  I'd listen to anything.

Music was a huge deal for me. The cd player was front and center above my dorm-room desk, with all my favorite cds within reaching distance. Music was played at top volume, the better to feel it wash all over me.  I have loved re-finding these college-favorite cds, tucked away in boxes and shuttled from place to place ever since: The Cure's Wish, The Smiths, Tori Amos.

The album in question today is one of those CDs I picked up in the early 90s, a little indie thing put out by a Bad Dog Records in 1991 for a band apparently based in Ann Arbor. If I can be frank, the rest of the album is crap - or, if I'm feeling generous, highly not to my taste. But this song - this song is incredible, full of great harmonies, a free-wheeling tempo, and an exuberant and joyous melody.

I wanted to share it with you all, and not only am I unable to find a share-able you-tube or equivalent version, I struggle even finding mention of this band. Well, 1991 - a lot has changed since then, don't we all know.  I sat down with the cd today to try to decipher the lyrics, with limited success. I can't quite unravel the story these lyrics tell. But the idea of "Back to your source": that, I can get behind.

Back To Your Source, by The Difference, off their album Groundswell
Lyrics by Ramsey Gouda, (c) 1991 RamsJams Music (BMI); music by The Difference (c) 1991 No Beard Music (BMI)

Walk across the water
There's the devil's daughter
And I sing it (for the change to my mind, I sing it for my __?)
And so we live (.............?)
with these bloodstains on our hands.

Once, I could walk to you; the solitude was more than we could share
But now you've gone away, and there you stand, cold naked and bare
Is there something you're searching for? I don't know.
If there's something you're searching for, let it show.
Have the years of discovery taken the toll?
Like the sheets of eternity, they unfold.

Go back in, go back in, go back in, go back to your source.

Once passion flowed through you like hoping(?) to your neverending seas
would carry me away, into that place where (?) grow.
Is there something you're searching for? I don't know.
If there's something you're searching for, let it show.
Was the (white) like the river when you're so (?)
With a tragic embrace, I ask: Where'd you go?

Go back in, go back in, go back in, go back to your source.

Time turns to windows through which we can see where we have been.
I've seen the broken face of empty spaces between you & me.
Is there something you're searching for? I don't know.
If there's something you're searching for, let me know.
Should the years come between us, I want you to know
I will love you forever, 'cause you're in my soul.

Go back in, go back in, go back in, go back to your source.
I'll be there for you.

(the music is what makes this, though)

Long is the river flowing to the sea
And in my blood a shiver rising in me
Across the horizon far beyond the sky
Is a land that I dream of
Where the sparrow takes flight

And you come to me like a flame
I warm my hands on the breath of life
Still haunted by the coldness that came
Torn between the love and the sorrow inside

And you come to me like a thorn
Garland of roses around my head
Sweet and sacred as the sun
Beautiful til my fingers bled

Under the black
Under the night
Under the darkest thing you know
There is a light
There is a fire
There is an everlasting glow

And I'll meet you there in the lilac blooms
And we'll dance and sing under the rising moon

And there is a place I know
Where a songbird sings high upon a hill
I can hear her from the North
When my breath is quiet and the air still

Under the black
Under the night
Under the darkest thing you know
There is a light
There is a fire
There is an everlasting glow

And I'll meet you there in the lilac blooms
And we'll dance and sing under the rising moon

And you leave me now for a while
Long is the journey to the other side
But I am comforted still
When I think of you smiling like a child

I've got a playlist called "A haute voix" for songs that really must be sung out loud. The best ones (for me) are big vampy swing numbers. Here are the latest two in the list. Also, shout out to [personal profile] transfigurationfor the "change your luck" message. I hear ya!

Okay, this may lead you to feel I'm a complete dork, but "the sound of music" has been in my head lately, and the lyrics are... surprisingly good. At least for someone for whom nature is a big part of life.
